QUEEN ARTICHOKE
There is nothing better than grilled artichoke, which leaves are eaten slowly one by one. According to my taste, artichoke is a queen of vegetables.
It is a plant with a powerful, up to two meters high stem, which is covered by thorny leaves. On the top of the plant spherical, thorny flower baskets are developed, which are harvested before flowering. The plant blooms in purple color in summer and autumn. It is appreciated as a delicacy throughout the Mediterranean.
The artichoke is also very healthy. Leaves contain bitter substances which increase the functioning of our salivary glands and in the stomach it has a positive effect on the release of digestive juices. This way it facilitates the functioning of digestion. Artichokes facilitate also the flow of blood through the liver, and thus regenerate them. On the basis of artichokes – the active substance cynarin, the drug for lowering blood cholesterol was made.

I think that with a regular eating of artichokes, you can only do good to your body. But unfortunately fresh artichokes can not be bought throughout the year, so they preserve them in the jars. Polizzi family puts artichokes in olive oil with a little bit of vinegar and spices. Also a very small part of a hot pepper is added so that they have a really mild spicy flavor. They are the best eaten out of the jar and also as a side dish.
 
HOW IT STARTED
Polizzi oil-extraction plant was created about 60 years ago with Mr. Luigi Polizzi, who was very versatile and solid man. He began to develop his passion for olive oil. His daughter Michela Polizzi together with her children carried on the family tradition with the same care and attention, dedicating herself to the cultivation of their olive groves situated at an altitude of 600 meters on land in the town of Caltanissetta in the heart of Sicily.
Unfortunately Mrs. Michela died and today her sons Luigi and Mario are taking care of the olive groves and are expanding this great passion for olive oil on to their children.
Besides making organic extra virgin olive oil, Polizzi family also processes various vegetables and fruits. We decided to place artichokes into our offer, because they are really delicious and because of added hot pepper also different. In the jars are artichokes of Sicilian origin.
